Mr. Steve Kraus graduated (1975) with a BS in physical therapy from Wichita State University, Wichita, KS. Employed 1975-1978 at the Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend, KS, and 1978-1981 at the Head, Neck Facial Pain Clinic, Atlanta, Ga. In 1979, a dentist introduced Mr. Kraus to the TMJ Facial Pain Clinic, Emory University Dental School, Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Kraus spent 1 day a week treating patients at the TMJ dental clinic until the dental school closed in 1992. In 1981, Mr. Kraus started his own private practice. He established a referral base of over 100 dentists and oral surgeons.
Mr. Kraus holds a clinical adjunct faculty position (1983-present) at the Division of Physical Therapy Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine. In 1983, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Physical Therapy Alumni Award, Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas. In 1985, he was appointed as “Subject Matter Expert” by the Orthopedic Specialty Council for the orthopedic certification examination and in 1994 Mr. Kraus was honored by the Physical Therapy Association of Georgia as a pioneer and contributor to the physical therapy profession.
In 1992, Mr. Kraus became a Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) in Physical Therapy. In 2021, the ABPT Specialties granted Mr. Kraus the designation “OCS emeritus”. Mr. Kraus is Manual Therapy Certified (MTC) 1994, Certified Cervical Temporomandibular Therapist (CCTT) 2008 and Certified in Orofacial Dry Needling (CODN) 2012.
Since 1975, Mr. Kraus has been a member of the APTA and Orthopedic Section and is a member (2015) of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. Mr. Kraus is a founding member, board member, and is chair of the application and CEU documentation committee of The Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial and Cervical Therapeutics (PTBCCT).
Mr. Kraus is an editor, author, and a co-author of a number of articles and chapters on TMD and cervical spine disorders. He has taught over 360 courses in the US and Canada on the evaluation and management of TMD. He has been invited to speak at over 80 dental study clubs and prestigious dental conferences to include the American Equilibration Society, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, and the Thomas P Hinman Dental Meeting. Mr. Kraus is known among his peers as a pioneer in the field of TMD.
