Bucala is Professor of Medicine, Pathology, and Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University. His long-standing research interest has been on the mechanisms by which the immune response produces disease.
He is recognized for two research accomplishments: the immune cytokine, MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor), and the circulating fibrocyte. While MIF was first identified in the 1930s, it eluded molecular description until the unambiguous cloning of the gene in 1993.
