Dr. Beitler’s primary research focus is on individualizing lung-protective ventilation to enhance prevention of ventilator-induced lung injury in ARDS. His current emphasis is in two overlapping areas: (1) occult lung injury caused by patient-ventilator dyssynchrony in ARDS, and (2) sizing the ARDS “baby lung” to predict lung stress and strain during standardized low tidal volume ventilation. Dr. Beitler also leads several investigations into optimal management of post-cardiac arrest syndrome (PCAS). Here he is investigating (1) the potential role for lung-protective mechanical ventilation in PCAS, and (2) potential toxicity from excess beta-adrenergic stimulation associated with certain vasopressors routinely used in PCAS.
