Dr. Hasan Mukhtar is Helfaer Professor of Cancer Research and Research Director and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin. Up to March 2002 he was at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where he was Professor Departments of Dermatology, Environmental Health Sciences, Radiation Oncology, Physiology and Biophysics and Co-Director of the Skin Diseases Research Center and Program Leader of Cancer Genetics and Prevention of the Comprehensive Cancer Center. He joined the Department of Dermatology at Case Western Reserve University as an Assistant Professor in 1980 where in 1990, he rose to the level of full Professor. Dr. Mukhtar is a highly productive scientist; he is an author of 330 original peer reviewed scientific publications, 14 editorials, 58 book chapters and 440 abstracts. He is well recognized for his research work in multidisciparary area of Toxicology, Pharmacology, Carcinogenesis, Photobiology and Photodynamic Therapy of Cancer. Dr. Mukhtar is best known for his work on elucidating cancer chemopreventive efficacy of dietary substances and establishing novel molecular targets for cancer prevention. He was the first one to describe cancer chemopreventive effects of the beverage tea. In his career, Dr. Mukhtar has trained 38 postdoctoral fellows and 22 predoctoral students. Dr. Mukhtar has served as a member of the Medical and Scientific Review Committee of the Dermatology Foundation and as a member reviewer or Chairman for various NIH, VA and American Cancer Society Study Sections and Site Visiting Teams. Currently, he is a member of the ACS Study Section on Carcinogenesis and Environment, VA Merit Review Board on Oncology and Department of Defense study sections on breast, prostate and ovarian cancers. His research program is well supported by the NIH and other federal and private organizations. Currently he is the Principle Investigator on 5 NIH and two other grants. He has served on the Editorial Boards of Drug Metabolism and Disposition, Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Year Book of Pharmacology, and The Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Currently, he is a member of the Editorial Boards of Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Photodermatology, Photoimmunology and Photomedicine, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Experimental Dermatology, Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, Cancer Letters, International Journal of Environmental Hygiene, Clinical Cancer Research and Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention. Dr. Mukhtar is a member of the 'Editorial Academy” of International Journal of Oncology and is an Associate Editor of Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology, Photochemistry and Photobiology and Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology. Dr. Mukhtar authored two well-regarded books, 'Pharmacology of the Skin: and 'Skin Cancer: Models and Human Relevance” which were published by the CRC Press.
