Gaetano T. Montelione. American Biophysical Chemist. Her primary expertise is in protein biochemistry and NMR spectroscopy. she studied experimental and theoretical physical chemistry at Cornell University and completed her Ph.D. thesis under the joint supervision of Prof. H. A. Scheraga and Prof. K. Wüthrich. With Prof. G. Wagner she carried out work in NMR pulse sequence development, including the design and implementation of the first triple-resonance protein NMR experiments. The particular strength of our laboratory has been the development of computational NMR methods and software for the analysis of protein structures and dynamics.
She has also directed a few dozen X-ray crystallography projects, and several integrative projects combining NMR, crystallography, SAXS, and molecular modeling. As Director of the Northeast Structural Genomics Consortium (NESG) for 16 years (2000 – 2016), she also has experience in the development of software and databases for structural biology, and in creating a successful high-throughput pipeline for protein sample and structure production. The NESG program involved extensive efforts in new technology development for protein sample production, NMR, X-ray crystallography, and structural bioinformatics, and resulted in more than 350 peer-reviewed publications. More than 1,300 3D structures have been determined by our team using both crystallography and NMR methods.
