Dr. Angie Nishio-Lucar is an Associate Professor of Medicine and transplant nephrologist. She is the Medical Director of the Living Kidney Donor Transplant Program and the Fellowship Director of the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship.
Dr. Angie Nishio-Lucar was born in Lima, Peru, where she spent her childhood, completed her undergraduate education and medical school in one of the most sought-after Institutions. Her residency in internal medicine took place at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan, followed by a fellowship in nephrology and transplant nephrology at the University of Virginia. She joined the UVA faculty in 2013.
In her clinical work, Dr. Angie Nishio-Lucar specializes in living kidney donor transplantation as well as racial and ethnic disparities in kidney transplantation. She also has a clinical interest in transitions of care, such as pediatric transplant patients transitioning into adulthood, as well as transplantation of the morbidly obese. Dr. Nishio-Lucar’s research interests include health care disparities in racial-ethnic minorities with a focus on the Hispanic community and their challenges surrounding access to transplantation and to living kidney donation.
