Dr Carlson is a neurosurgeon who graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and subsequently completed residency training in Neurosurgery at UNM. Clinical interests include vascular and skull base neurosurgery, having completed fellowships in these areas at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of South Florida, one of the largest skull-base referral centers in the US. Dr Carlson is certified in all areas of general adult and pediatric neurosurgery with a particular focus on complex cranial pathology including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, stroke treatment and prevention, brain tumors such as meningiomas, vestibular schwannomas, and gliomas, trigeminal neuralgia. With specialized training in microsurgical and endoscopic techniques as well as minimally invasive techniques, including endovascular treatment for vascular problems, various options can often be offered for these complex problems. In addition to clinical work, Dr Carlson has a masters degree in clinical research and is the Principal Investigator on a number of ongoing clinical trials at UNM.
