Release Date: December 20, 2020
Expiration Date: January 7, 2021
Accreditation:
Pharmacy Times Continuing Education™ is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Activity Overview:
Cases of head and neck cancer, which include malignancies of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and nasal sinuses, are estimated to be over 65,000 in number in 2019 with more than 14,000 deaths in the United States. The prognosis in patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell cancer is usually poor, necessitating evaluation of emerging treatment options. Immunotherapy, specifically checkpoint inhibitors, have a significant role in treatment and survival outcomes in this patient population. This program will focus on the place of immuno-oncology therapies within treatment paradigms, management of immune-related adverse effects, adherence monitoring, as well as evaluating therapeutic effectiveness. The session will also share critical information and clinical pearls needed to effectively manage patients with head and neck cancer receiving checkpoint inhibitors.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Examine risk factors for the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and prognosis factors for patient outcomes
• Analyze clinical safety evidence to support checkpoint inhibitor therapy for recurrent and metastatic HNSCC
• Identify benefits to the health care team of pharmacist intervention in patients receiving immune-oncology therapies including education and initiation of supportive care
