OVERVIEW
Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating, multisystem chronic inflammatory disease involving primarily synovial tissue leading to progressive joint destruction and increased morbidity and mortality. Disease identification, treatment and patient education is paramount in patient pain relief, slowing the destructive process, and improving patient function. This CME activity discusses the pathogenesis, diagnosis, clinical features and current up-to-date treatment options for patients suffering with rheumatoid arthritis.
Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
1. Cite the role genetics, environmental factors, immune cells and proinflammatory cytokines play in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.
2. Illustrate the clinical features and complications associated with rheumatoid arthritis
3. Prescribe treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis based upon current guidelines.
