Description:
This course describes the normal development of the placenta from the unique perspective of the implantation site. Diseases that affect the invasion of maternal tissue by fetal trophoblast, a major cause of morbidity during pregnancy, will be discussed including:

Topics:

  • Ectopic (tubal) pregnancy
  • Invasive implantation (Placenta accreta, increta, percreta)
  • Vascular abnormalities of implantation (Growth restriction, pre-eclampsia)
  • Tumors of intermediate trophoblast:
    • Exaggerated placental site (EPS)
    • Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT)
    • Placental site nodule (PSN)
    • Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT)

Objectives:

  • Describe the morphologic changes in the placental bed during normal pregnancy
  • Define subtypes of non-villous trophoblast and their functions in the placental bed
  • Describe major diseases that affect or are caused by abnormalities of implantation
