Description:
The development of movement system diagnoses is a top priority of the APTA. To that end, the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy Movement System Task Force has developed an initial set of movement system diagnoses applicable to individuals with balance deficits. In this webinar, the development and descriptions of these proposed diagnostic labels will be presented. Case examples will be used to demonstrate how these balance diagnoses can be applied in practice. In developing the balance diagnoses, the criteria for establishing diagnoses developed by the original ANPT Movement System Task Force as described in the Task Force’s White Paper (JNPT, 2018) as well as guidelines provided by APTA will be applied. Published works related to evidence-based theoretical frameworks for balance (postural control) and identified the essential underlying determinants of postural control as well as the key control strategies related to balance were reviewed. Based on this work, three main diagnostic labels (Deficit in Steady State Postural Control, Deficit in Anticipatory Postural Control, Deficit in Reactive Postural Control) are proposed. For each diagnostic label, a list of movement observations for each core task as well as the key examination findings that would likely be associated with each diagnostic label has been developed.
