Program description:
The novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the agent responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has led to a global public health emergency. The spread of cases is now described as widespread in Arizona. Based on the experience in COVID 19 endemic areas, a 30% surge is expected. In order to staff the surge, it is anticipated that physicians and other providers will be asked to care for hospitalized patients with COVID 19 as well as acutely ill patients.
With rapidly evolving information, the complete clinical spectrum is not yet fully understood, and health care providers may not be familiar with the most recent information related to the clinical course, diagnostic tests, treatment strategies, and inpatient considerations for this infection. There is also a need to educate health care providers on procedures to reduce their exposure as healthcare personnel.
The goal of this activity is to provide healthcare professionals with updated information on COVID-19 epidemiology, infection prevention, testing and diagnosis, and management of patients in inpatient settings. The guide also aims to provide health care providers with resources related to handling PPE to reduce the risk of transmission. Knowing this is an emerging and changing topic, this activity and guide also provide the learner with resources to maintain up-to-date knowledge on the effective diagnosis and management of patients with suspected COVID-19.
Learning objectives:
By the end of this educational module, the learner will be able to:
• Describe the epidemiology of 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
• Discuss the transmission rates for symptomatic patients with 2019 novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19).
• Describe the most common clinical presentation for patients with suspected 2019 novelcoronavirus disease (COVID-19).
• Outline a differential diagnosis for patients with suspected 2019 novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19).
• Develop an evaluation, management and discharge plan for patients with suspected andconfirmed 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
• Describe procedures for PPE donning and duffing to reduce exposure as healthcarepersonnel. (Optional Module)
• Identify additional, focused resources to manage patients with 2019 novel coronavirusdisease (COVID-19) in the critical care setting.
