Emergency Airway: Rescuing a Patient from an Adverse Anesthetic Event is organized by American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).
Release Date: March 28, 2018
Expiration Date: October 28, 2026
Description:
Airway obstruction and resultant hypoxemia can lead to anoxic brain damage and death if not corrected. Although pre-anesthetic pre-oxygenation can extend this time window, the declining airway should be promptly corrected to avoid catastrophe. Although standard airway techniques progressing up to endotracheal intubation are successful in most situations, a surgical airway is needed in under 1 percent of airway crises. In these most challenging cases, the surgical airway should be performed promptly and correctly.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
• Define non-interventional airway support procedures and techniques and their roles in the declining airway patient.
• Determine when an airway crisis is irreversible and merits an interventional airway.
• Differentiate between interventional airway options and proceed with a surgical airway in a timely fashion.
