Program description:
Adolescent consent and confidentiality is an area of concern in the delivery of health care to this patient population. Lack of information in this area is a barrier to optimal health care. Studies have shown that many physicians and other clinicians who deal with these issues on a daily basis are unsure of the management guidelines established for confidential care for adolescents.

The Arizona Medical Association (ArMA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics-Arizona Chapter (AzAAP) have partnered to create a guide and toolkit, reflecting current methodologies in adolescent health care and engaging adolescents and parents in decision-making.

This course will provide an overview of consent and confidentiality issues in adolescent healthcare, and is part of the launch event of the newly revised Consent & Confidentiality in Adolescent Health Care: A Guide for Arizona Health Care Practitioners.

This online CME activity is the result of a recording of a live event on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center.

Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:
• Discuss the issues of consent and confidentiality as barriers to care of the adolescent patient.
• Describe the legal aspects of adolescent consent and confidentiality.
• Combine State Statutes and Federal Regulations with ethical principles to choose the best course of action in selected patient care scenarios.
• Identify appropriate changes to their EMR to maintain the confidentiality needs related to minor adolescents and comply with the requirements of state and federal laws.
