Description:
As the volume of Total Knee Arthroplasty increases worldwide, patient age ranges increase and length stay decreases, clinicians are seeking up to date, evidence based information to optimally treat this patient population. Relevant anatomy, indications for surgery, surgical/anesthesia considerations and implications for physical therapy in total knee arthroplasty, partial knee arthroplasty and revision surgeries will be discussed in this program. Current evidence-based early phase rehabilitation principles will be presented, with recent trends towards same day discharge explored. Case studies will integrate this knowledge into practice.

Learning Objectives:
HSS Continuing Education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Review relevant anatomy of the knee
  • Classify different knee arthroplasty surgeries and their implications for physical therapy
  • Describe the different types of anesthesia used in knee arthroplasty surgery and the implications for physical therapy
  • List common complications following TKA
  • Describe the typical PT protocols for each type of surgery

Hospital for Special Surgery is a New York State Education Department approved provider for physical therapy continuing education. This course is approved for a maximum of 1.5 contact hours.

Board of Physical Therapy Examiners Accredited Provider 2512063TX and meets continuing competence requirements for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant licensure renewal in Texas.
