Description:
Total Hip Arthroplasty is a common surgical procedure for those patients with pain and loss of function. This program will review relevant anatomy, indications for surgery, surgical considerations and implications for physical therapy in total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty and hip resurfacing. Various surgical approaches and the associated research around precautions will be presented along with current evidenced-based rehabilitation principles and specific treatment strategies. Recent trends towards same day discharge will be discussed and case studies will integrate concepts into practice.

Learning Objectives:
HSS Continuing Education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Review of relevant anatomy
  • Describe the different types and surgical procedures of THA including hip resurfacing and hemiarthroplasty and their associated hip precautions (posterior-lateral, modified-pose, anterior)
  • Describe the types of anesthesia used in THA
  • Describe early phase PT guidelines and pathways
  • Review frequently asked patient questions.

Physical Therapists: 
Hospital for Special Surgery is a New York State Education Department approved provider for physical therapy continuing education. This course is approved for a maximum of 1 contact hour.

This activity is provided by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners Accredited Provider and meets continuing competence requirements for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant licensure renewal in Texas.
