OVERVIEW

Sentinel Headache Associated With Intracranial Aneurysms is organized by Med-IQ, Duke University Health System.

Initial Release Date: February 22, 2024
Expiration Date: February 21, 2025

Description:
Here are the key takeaways from this activity. Deeper insights and evidence, plus an opportunity to receive credit, are available at the "Continue" button below.

  • If a patient presents with new-onset severe headache, the "worst headache of their lives,” and/or worsening headache, the likelihood of having sentinel headache and/or headache due to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is high; thus, sentinel headache should have a high place in the differential diagnosis until proven otherwise
  • Lumbar puncture to assess for the presence of xanthochromia has a very low yield; therefore, it is a suboptimal biomarker for sentinel headache
  • CTA and/or MRA should be obtained if there is a high suspicion of sentinel headache due to intracranial aneurysm

Learning Objective:
Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  • Differentiate sentinel headache due to intracranial aneurysm from other worsening headaches.
