Description:
In this course, we will present an overview of depression as well as risk factors, diagnosis and treatment. We will discuss depression as it relates to men and women, highlighting the differences in the depressive symptoms and treatment. DSM-5 diagnostic criteria will be addressed including depression models dealing with postpartum, antepartum, and several menstrual criteria. We will highlight special populations and their relationship to depression including older adults and teens.
Course Objectives:
• Explain depression including risk factors, symptoms and diagnosis.
• List treatment options for depression including both traditional and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments.
• Compare and contrast the differences in depression in women and men.
• Describe the DSM-5 criteria for depression
• State the symptoms and treatment for depression in the older population as well as the teen population.
• Discuss the special considerations when dealing with a depressed patient from various backgrounds and culture.
