OVERVIEW

Unconscious bias and its implications on patient care and treatment continue to be a challenge within the healthcare setting. Recognition of unconscious bias has quickly become an important factor in treating each patient equally and fairly. This two part series discusses the “must know” components of unconscious bias including definition, recognition, its implications on stereotyping and the key minimization strategies. 

 

Educational Objectives:

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Define unconscious bias and list its effects in the healthcare setting
  2. Explore the implications of unconscious bias on professional relations with colleagues and patient care.
  3. Identify the relationship between unconscious bias and discrimination.
  4. Explore the role of stereotypes in unconscious bias. 
  5. Identify steps in minimizing unconscious bias in health professionals and the healthcare environment.
