OVERVIEW

Join our CE course for Registered Nurses (RNs) on Anticoagulants - Safe Administration and Monitoring to enhance your understanding of thrombogenesis and its clinical implications. Learn the mechanisms, uses, and protocols for anticoagulant medications like heparin, warfarin, and aspirin. Gain skills in selecting appropriate therapies for thrombotic disorders, adjusting dosages, and conducting essential laboratory tests. This course emphasizes patient education, lifestyle modifications, and monitoring to ensure safe, effective anticoagulant use, prevent complications, and promote long-term therapy adherence.

Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Learn about the processes leading to thrombogenesis, including how atherosclerosis and plaque rupture contribute to arterial and venous thrombosis. Identify factors that transform a thrombus into an embolus and the health implications of such transformations.
  2. Describe the action mechanisms, uses, and administration protocols for medications like heparin, warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, alteplase, and streptokinase. Discuss when and why each medication type is preferred based on clinical scenarios.
  3. Choose suitable drug therapy based on the type of thrombotic disorder, such as DVT, pulmonary embolism, or myocardial infarction, and consider the patient’s overall health. Adjust dosages and regimens according to therapeutic goals and monitor outcomes.
  4. Conduct necessary laboratory tests, such as PT/INR for warfarin and aPTT for heparin, to maintain therapeutic levels and minimize bleeding risks. Recognize symptoms of complications and educate patients on the safe use of medications, including self-administration of injectables like enoxaparin and dietary considerations for warfarin users.
  5. Craft comprehensive management strategies that include lifestyle modifications, regular monitoring, and patient education to prevent complications and ensure long-term adherence to therapy. Understand drug interactions and follow up on treatment schedules. Analyze case studies to refine clinical decision-making skills and manage challenges in treating patients with complex medical histories or those on multi-drug regimens.

The estimated time to complete this activity is 1 hour.
