OVERVIEW

Experiences, Inclusion, and Leadership for Sexual and Gender Minority Scientists in Eye and Vision Research is organized by The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and will be held on Oct 02, 2024.

Summary:
Scientific teams composed of people with diverse experiences tend to be more innovative, leading to better science. Despite this need for diversity LGBTQ STEM professionals are more likely to experience career limitations, harassment, and professional devaluation leading to a ‘leaky pipeline’ of researchers. LGBTQ scientists may feel under pressure to not be their "full selves" at work, and the strain of remaining ‘hidden’ in workspaces can result in the use of brain space and energy that could otherwise be used more productively. This webinar will promote the visibility of LGBTQ scientists in eye and vision research and other related STEM fields, and celebrate role models, achievements and progress, supporting the more inclusive environment needed for better productivity and better science.
