Course Description:
The Pac-12 Conference, the NCAA, as well as the David Geffen Medical School at UCLA, in collaboration with the American Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) and the U.S. Council for Athletes Health (USCAH), will organize the Health Equity Summit addressing Race, Gender, Identity and Accessibility matters for Collegiate Athlete Health on January 26-27, 2023 in The Luskin Center on the UCLA campus.
The summit will offer participants the opportunity to meet multidisciplinary experts and experts in research and medical care of athletes to improve the health of all athletes. One of the primary goals of this summit aims to present examples of successful educational programs for professionals in sports medicine at collegiate levels and coaches and strategies to create an inclusive and welcoming environment that supports underrepresented and diverse student-athletes now and into the future. Participants will be given a chance to analyze healthcare delivery using equity, diversity, and inclusion perspectives to evaluate this impact on collegiate student-athletes. The two-day event will include talks and panel discussions including former and current student-athletes, physicians, trainers administrators, educators, and trainers who will discuss the historical and current disparities that exist for groups that are not represented, their particular burdens, and the impact on mental health.
Objectives:
At the completion of this informative program, participants should be better able to:
• Discuss historical and current gaps in healthcare coverage for minority populations
• Recognize the obstacles that are in place and hinder underrepresented populations from accessing quality medical services
• Discuss how differences and obstacles to accessing health care affect the student-athlete
• Find out the specific requirements for an underrepresented student-athlete
• Consider the potential effects that mental health programming could have on student-athletes from underrepresented groups.
• Provide effective education programs for the members of the college sports medicine units
• Find the best strategies for creating an environment where diverse and underrepresented athletes feel at ease receiving services.
• Recognize strategies for promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion across multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
