Description:
Good safe patient sedation starts with preoperative data collection, treatment planning, anxiety control, appropriate local anesthesia, (oral sedation vs IV sedation), and appropriate post op pain control. Dr. Waite will discuss the principles of Medicine, risk analysis, ethics, narcotic use, prescription writing, and clinical pharmacology. The 3 goals of dental sedation: conscious, comfortable, and cooperative. Sedation will never take the place of adequate dental local anesthesia, therefore this lecture will also review nerve blocks of the head and neck.

After participating in this course, attendees will

  • Understand recent advances in conscious sedation techniques, the goals of sedation and industry standards
  • Review the best methods to readily increase or decrease the level of sedation
  • Understand techniques for assessing patient variability and ensuring best drug choice
  • Review principles of medicine for assessing which patients are appropriate for sedation

  • Review analgesic prescribing guidelines in connection with the effective management of acute dental pain
  • discuss and explain nerve blocks; IAN, Gow Gaits, Vazirani-akinosi, V2, infra-orbital
  • Learn dentistry's role in combating substance abuse
  • Understand the basic pharmacology and side effects of opioid and nonopioid analgesics
