OVERVIEW

Anaesthetists as Educators (AaE): Anaesthetists Non Technical Skills (ANTS) is organized by The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and will be held on Jun 06, 2025 at Royal College of Anaesthetists, London, England, United Kingdom.

Description:
The one-day anaesthetists non-technical skills (ANTS) course is designed for trainees, SAS doctors and Consultants, who wish to enhance their understanding of the human factors and non-technical skills as applied to Anaesthesia. This course is suitable for all anaesthetists, who wish to become more familiar with using the ANTS framework for observation and feedback on non-technical skills in others.

The course will align with the GMC's report to the four UK governments to ensure a sustainable model for anaesthetic training, agile enough to respond to evolving patient need and service opportunities, as well as resulting in a more flexible  workforce.

In line with the new curriculum, the emphasis will be on training to be future leaders  and to work well in multi-disciplinary teams which all doctors will need to achieve by the time they have completed their training.

Topics to be covered:

  • The theoretical concepts underlying each of the four categories in the ANTS framework (Situation Awareness, Decision Making, Task Management, Team Working) will be discussed in short presentations.
  • Videos of simulated clinical scenarios will be observed to facilitate scrutiny of behaviours related to each of the non-technical skills categories.
  • Facilitated discussion relating to observed performances in the videos will help participants to link behaviours to categories in the framework, and to use the ANTS tool for rating behaviours.
  • A final session will discuss aspects of using ANTS in clinical practice, with tips and suggestions for building up confidence and experience of using ANTS in the workplace.
