OVERVIEW

58. AO Trauma Blended Course I - Principles of operative fracture treatment with practical exercises is organized by AO Trauma, AO Foundation and will be held from Feb 25 - Mar 19, 2025 at Messe Freiburg, Freiburg Im Breisgau, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.

Description:
Participants are prepared for the course in an “online precourse self-assessment”. This enables the instructor to adapt the course to the group of participants. Participants fill out a questionnaire before the course begins. The course includes a large number of evidence-based lectures covering the most important topics. The AO Skills Lab teaches participants the basic principles and practical know-how relevant to operations at interactive stations. Through experiences such as correctly tightening a screw and drilling with different sharp drills, participants acquire important surgical skills and learn basic biomechanical concepts in a safe learning environment. In the practical exercises, participants practice the application of various fixation methods. Small group discussions promote participants’ understanding of decision-making and patient management. After the course, participants can reflect on their learning success on the important topics in an “online postcourse self-assessment” and at the same time provide the organizers with feedback for planning future courses. Online courses: - Tuesday 25 February I approx. 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - Wednesday 26 February I approx. 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - Wednesday 5 March I approx. 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - Thursday 6 March I approx. 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. On-site event: - Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday 17 - 19 March 2025

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the concepts of stability, its impact on bone healing and the use of implants to achieve adequate stability
  • Plan treatment based on assessment, imaging, classification and decision making
  • Apply reduction techniques in fracture treatment with special attention to the soft tissues
  • Apply adequate fixation techniques for the treatment of shaft fractures and simple (peri-)articular fractures • Identify and evaluate special problems related to the pediatric skeleton, pelvic injuries, osteoporotic fractures, postoperative infections, delayed healing or non-healing
  • Plan the initial treatment of a polytrauma patient

Goal:
The AO Trauma Principles Course teaches basic principles and current concepts in the treatment of injuries, taking into account the latest techniques in surgical fracture treatment. The AO Trauma Principles Course is intended as a first step on the path to lifelong learning in the field of surgical fracture treatment and focuses on the basic principles of fracture treatment.
