On behalf of the Thuringian Society for Internal Medicine, we would like to invite you to this year's meeting, which is dedicated to the fascinating and interdisciplinary field of infectious diseases. This year marks a significant milestone, as for the first time in Thuringia, a specialist in internal medicine with a focus on infectious diseases is now being recognized. This reflects the growing importance of this field, not least due to the recent global challenges.

The pandemic has shown us the dramatic impact of infectious diseases. In addition, the development of antibiotic resistance is a constant challenge, forcing us to develop new antibiotics and to resume old therapeutic concepts, such as the use of bacteriophages. At the same time, climate change shows how environmental changes influence the spread of vectors and how arthropod-associated infections are also increasingly spreading in Germany.

Infectious diseases are characterized by the dynamic evolution of microorganisms and are subject to continuous change. This makes infectiology a particularly exciting and challenging field. Its interdisciplinary nature requires good cooperation with all medical disciplines, which is also reflected in the program of our conference.

In recent years, increasing data have been generated suggesting a link between infectious diseases and cardiovascular or mental illnesses. These connections illustrate how profoundly infectious diseases affect our health and how important a holistic approach is in medicine.
