Echocardiography (ultrasound examination of the heart) is a fundamental examination method in clinical physiology and cardiology. In general, all patients with suspected or proven heart disease need an echocardiographic examination. The examination provides essential information about the anatomy and function of the heart. The greatest benefit is found in patients with heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart muscle diseases (cardiomyopathies), valvular disease and congenital heart defects.
Transthoracic echocardiography is one of the most common forms of imaging: in 2019, approx. 200,000 such examinations (see Swedish Association of Clinical Physiology, Register Report 2019, and at the Academic Hospital around 20,000 transthoracic echocardiographies per year. In the last version (2021) of "Care course Heart failure - new debut" of the National system for knowledge management / Health care, transthoracic echocardiography is mentioned as the basic diagnostic in all new cases of heart failure, which is estimated to occur in approx. 40,000 people per year in Sweden.
