Description
People with back problems make up a large proportion of patients in healthcare in general and orthopedics in particular. Between 70 and 80 percent suffer from low back pain during their lifetime, and many develop chronic problems (ref. SBU report Nachemson et al, ont_ryggen_ont_nacken_fulltext.pdf ( sbu.se ). The societal costs, both direct and indirect, are very large especially for those cases turns into a chronic condition. (ref. The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge on a more systematic treatment of these patients, which in turn can contribute to more equal and evidence-based care.
A qualified specialist in orthopedics must be able to handle commonly occurring spinal diseases such as lumbago, cervicalgia, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, trauma, tumor and infectious conditions in the back. In addition, knowledge is needed in being able to comprehensively assess plain X-rays as well as MRI and CT of the back. A specialist also needs to have knowledge of treatment options for spinal deformities as well as knowledge of complications after spinal surgery.
