The manner in which deafness is announced and information is disseminated can have a considerable impact on families' adjustment to their child's diagnosis as well as their engagement and involvement with services.

The course is empirical and research-based. It is intended for audiologists, medical personnel, and other professionals who work with families during the early stages of deafness diagnosis and the subsequent period. The workshop is extremely engaging, with opportunities for hands-on practise with professional actors as well as hearing and discussing real-life family situations.

"The meaningful and successful involvement of a newly discovered child's parents and family is the single most important indicator of that child's success." (Yoshinaga-Itano, 2000)
