Objectives

Upon completion of the program, attendees will be able to: 

1. Discuss physical characteristics of ultrasound and ultrasound machine operations and operational features of a portable unit in the generation and storage of quality ultrasound images.
2. Establish basic skills in the use of the laptop and hand held ultrasound units for acquisition and interpretation of ultrasound images using B mode and/or Color Doppler.
3. Acquire images of the heart in PLAX and Apical 4-chamber views using the laptop and hand held ultrasound units that are adequate for use in assessment of global heart function.
4. Perform basic ultrasound exams of the abdominal aorta for aneurysm screening, of the IVC for size and contractility, of the liver, gall bladder, and spleen, of the right and left kidneys, and urinary bladder using laptop and hand held ultrasound units.
5. Perform musculoskeletal ultrasound procedures on the knee and shoulder.
6. Perform ultrasound guided procedures (paracentesis, thoracentesis, and central line placement) using the laptop ultrasound unit and phantoms.
7. Acquire images of the lung pleura with the laptop unit that demonstrate the presence or absence of lung sliding, B lines, and A lines.
8. Combine imaging of heart, IVC and lungs (laptop unit only) as a means to perform a limited cardiopulmonary exam with laptop and hand held ultrasound units.
