OVERVIEW

Current research in neuroscience, motor learning and cognition has added new dimensions to our understanding and practice in stroke rehabilitation. In addition, the changes in health care have also impacted our management of this population. The course will address the neurophysiology and neuroplasticity of recovery after stroke and the pattern and predictability of outcomes using modern technology (imaging, EEG, TMS, genetics). Lectures and workshops will address health care access for patients with stroke, the neuropsychological consequences of stroke, fall prevention, the importance of selection of treatment parameters such as intensity that will maximize positive neuroplastic changes, management of the upper extremity, dual–task training, family adaptation after stroke, and community based therapeutic groups for fitness and communication. These will provide participants with the theoretical, and practical advances in stroke rehabilitation and how to integrate these with the changes in healthcare.
